The Broad
This museum is hard to ignore.
Not only because it’s L.A.’s newest addition to its red hot art scene but, particularly if you are a lover of both art and contemporary architecture, this stunning ‘honeycomb-esque’ building is definitely one you’ll want to see!
The Broad is not huge and is located in Downtown LA – DTLA – just across from Disney Hall on the corner of 2nd St. and Grand Ave. (see two pre-Opening images in the carousel). Some of the artists represented include Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, Jenny Holzer, Ed Ruscha, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Kara Walker, and Andy Warhol as well as an amazing current exhibit which runs through Oct. 2 by photographic artist Cindy Sherman. The Broad’s first special exhibition – Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life – showcases 120 works located on the first floor.
General Admission is free and can be reserved online, however there is a $12 charge for special exhibitions. Advance admission tickets are released online on the first of each month for the following month (e.g., on September 1, tickets for October will be released, etc.). If you don’t have a reservation and don’t mind waiting in line you can join the onsite standby line and wait 10 – 45 minutes (on average) on weekdays or 60 to 90 minutes on weekends. See this page for more info: http://thebroad.org/visit/today . Parking is available under the building for $12 for three hours and $22 all day. Other parking structures throughout downtown offer competitive parking rates. Taking the train to DTLA is also an option.
There are also some fantastic restaurants located near Grand Ave. and Disney Hall that offer great some great Happy Hours and lunch time menus. One in particular is Pez Cantina (http://suzyknowsla.com/restaurants/pez-cantina/ )! La la LOVE IT!
